SOMALIA: Journalist released on appeal

The Writers in Prison Committee of PEN International welcomes the release on appeal of journalist Abdiaziz Abdinur Ibrahim on 17 March 2013.

On 17 March 2013, a Supreme Court judge ruled that there was “no proper reason” for Abdiaziz Abdinur Ibrahim’s continued detention and ordered that the conviction against him be quashed. The freelance journalist, who has reported for several local and international news outlets including Dalsan Radio, Badri Media Productions and the UK-based Daily Telegraph, was released immediately, having spent 66 days in prison.

Ibrahim was convicted in February 2013 of insulting a government body, “spreading false news” and inducing false evidence, amongst other charges, after interviewing a woman who alleged she had been raped by state security forces. In a previous appeal, his original sentence of one year was reduced to six months.
