(German) Mehr als sieben Jahre steht Liu Xia nun schon unter Hausarrest. Sie wurde weder eines Vergehens beschuldigt noch angeklagt oder verurteilt. Der Hausarrest wurde über sie verhängt, weil sie mit Liu Xiaobo verheiratet war. Er zählte zu der Generation von reformgesinnten Intellektuellen, die nach der Kulturrevolution und während der ersten Öffnungsphase Chinas den damaligen intellektuellen Diskurs bestimmten. Liu Xia gehörte in den vergleichsweise toleranten 1980er Jahren zur engagierten, sich internationalen Strömungen zuwendenden Künstlerszene Pekings. Continue reading

In May 2016, Can Dündar, Turkish journalist, documentary filmmaker, author, and editor in chief of the newspaper Cumhuriyet, was sentenced to five years and ten months in prison. His colleague, Erdem Gül, was condemned to five years imprisonment. International media deemed the trial against the two government-critical journalists a “strike against Turkish freedom of press” and there was tremendous public attention from the outset. Pinar Selek, Turkey

Pinar Selek

Pinar Selek is a writer, scientist, feminist activist, and member of Turkish PEN. Punishment (sentenced in absentia): life imprisonment under tightened terms (36 years in solitary confinement)
She was born on 8th October 1971 in Istanbul, attended French grammar school, and studied sociology at Mimar Sinan University. She was involved in the organisation of several initiatives of the feminist movement and founded the feminist network Amargi for whose magazine she serves as editor in chief. In her publications, she addressed issues like the peace movement, discrimination of minorities as well as the connection between militarism and the development of gender identity. Continue reading
